Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered.

Can a foreign company register in France without a French accountant?

It can, but French bookkeeping, VAT and corporate tax rules are specific, and annual accounts must be filed with the commercial court registry. A chartered accountant keeps the company compliant from day one.

Branch or subsidiary: which one should a foreign company choose?

A branch is not a separate legal entity and its profits are taxed in France as a permanent establishment; a subsidiary (SAS or SARL) is a French company with limited liability. The choice depends on the activity, liability and tax position of the parent company.

Does a French company need a statutory auditor?

A French company must appoint a statutory auditor when it exceeds two of three thresholds: €5 million total assets, €10 million turnover and 50 employees. Groups and contributions in kind can also require one.

How much does a chartered accountant cost in France?

At ELIA, fees start at €250 excluding VAT per month for a company (SAS, SARL), depending on volume and services. The full grid is published on our pricing page.
